Issues: Work and Family

Balancing Faculty Careers and Family Work

"Balancing Faculty Careers and Family Work" is the theme of the November-December issue of Academe. This special issue of the magazine, published with the support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, documents an academic culture biased against caregiving and shows how the forced "choice" between an academic career and family commitments has disadvantaged women in the past. Surveying the policies and practices now available to help college and university faculty make time for fulfilling family lives, contributors argue that providing a more family-friendly climate for faculty will benefit both institutions and individuals. The issue also includes two major reports about investigations into academic freedom and tenure violations and a new AAUP statement deploring the expansion of policies requiring background checks on candidates for faculty appointments. The full issue is available on the AAUP Web site.
