Who
We Are
The
Berkeley Faculty Association chapter of the American Association
of University Professors (BFA/AAUP) is a voluntary membership
organization of Senate faculty. Founded pursuant to a 1972
resolution of the Berkeley Division, the BFA was established
in response to a perceived erosion of faculty "authority"
and since the state-funded Senate is barred from lobbying
provides Senate faculty with an independent political arm.
A key component of the BFA/AAUP's mission is to keep faculty
members informed on employment-related issues.
The
BFA/AAUP is a founding member of the Council of University
of California Faculty Associations (CUCFA) which coordinates
the advocacy work done on behalf of UC Senate faculty by the
various campus Faculty Associations. As part of CUCFA, the
BFA/AAUP participates in consultations with the UC Office
of the President over proposed changes to systemwide UC policies
that affect Senate faculty. Recent subjects of consultation
have included: the UC Retirement Plan, Health Insurance benefits,
Salary parity with our "Comparison 8," Conflict of Interest
and Outside Activities policies, Incompetence, as well as
Intellectual Property and Copyright issues.
Affiliating
with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP)
in the spring of 2000, the BFA is now one of the largest advocacy
chapters in the national AAUP.
