Week of Education Endorsement

The members of the Reactivate the Berkeley Faculty Association Committee endorse the "Week of Education" concerning the budget crisis. We encourage all faculty to find ways to participate in it. There are many possibilities, ranging from holding in-class discussions with students about the nature of the crisis and possible solutions to it, to taking part in walk outs, and attending the rallies, seminars, colloquiums, and other activities planned for this week.

In our view, these activities are not about disrupting classes or bringing the campus to a standstill. Rather, they are opportunities to educate our students, ourselves, and the public about the structural problems in state government and public culture that have undermined California's capacity to support broad student access to affordable, excellent public higher education. This week affords opportunities for us to examine and discuss these challenges and to debate the pros and cons of different ways to move the university to a more sustainable future.

We applaud our friends in SAVE and the Solidarity Working Group and all the other faculty, staff, and students involved in organizing the Week of Education.

A University That's Under Assault

Here is an op-ed by UCBFA member Richard Walker, UCB Geography professor, printed in the September 19, 2009 issue of The Oakland Tribune.

Who We Are

The Berkeley Faculty Association chapter of the American Association of University Professors (BFA/AAUP) is a voluntary membership organization of Senate faculty. Founded pursuant to a 1972 resolution of the Berkeley Division, the BFA was established in response to a perceived erosion of faculty "authority" and since the state-funded Senate is barred from lobbying provides Senate faculty with an independent political arm. A key component of the BFA/AAUP's mission is to keep faculty members informed on employment-related issues.

The BFA/AAUP is a founding member of the Council of University of California Faculty Associations (CUCFA) which coordinates the advocacy work done on behalf of UC Senate faculty by the various campus Faculty Associations. As part of CUCFA, the BFA/AAUP participates in consultations with the UC Office of the President over proposed changes to systemwide UC policies that affect Senate faculty. Recent subjects of consultation have included: the UC Retirement Plan, Health Insurance benefits, Salary parity with our "Comparison 8," Conflict of Interest and Outside Activities policies, Incompetence, as well as Intellectual Property and Copyright issues.

Affiliating with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) in the spring of 2000, the BFA is now one of the largest advocacy chapters in the national AAUP.
